"2014 Recipients"

Kayli McKinney - Evergreen School District Foundation Board $750

I am pleased to introduce Kayli McKinney as the Evergreen School District Foundation Board Scholarship recipient.  Kayli is senior at Union High School where she is also a member of the Cross Country and Track Teams.  In addition to her impressive academics, Kayli is very involved in the community with Girl Scouts and Red Cross Youth Council and clubs within her school including National Honor Society, Key Club, French Honor Society and French Club.  Last year, Kayli volunteered in a first grade classroom at Hearthwood Elementary.  This is where she truly discovered what she wanted to do with her future.  Kayli says “It is very inspiring to me to be a part of a child’s education, knowing what I teach them they will be using for the rest of their lives.”  Kayli has been accepted to Western Washington University where she will start next fall to work towards her teaching degree.  

Addison Underwood - Umpqua Bank $750

I am pleased to introduce you to Addison Underwood.  Addison is a senior at Heritage High School and is a very active member of the ASB Council during her four high school years.  As part of her work on the ASB Council, Allison is spearheading a campaign to raise money for a foundation called Charity Water, a non-profit organization that works to bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.  In addition to her busy academic schedule which includes multiple Advanced Placement courses, Allison finds time to play Lacrosse and participate in National Honor Society, FBLA, and DECA.  Allison’s dream is to one day become a pediatrician in a developing country.  Addison had this to say about her parents “My parents taught me from the time I was born that education was everything.  My parents aren’t rich in money and material things, but my parents are rich in life.”  

Jasmyne Bryant - Erik Runyan Jewelers $750   

I am pleased to introduce Jasmyne Bryant.  Jasmyne is a senior at Evergreen High School who has participated in many roles in the Evergreen High School Theatre productions, is active in LEO Club, Evergreen High School Junior Counsel, American Sign Language Club and as a student intern at Cascade Middle School.  Jasmyne has completed eight Advanced Placement and Honors courses over her high school career and maintains a 3.9 GPA.  One of her teachers had this to say “Jasmyne learned to manage her time and to recognize the importance of strong work ethic, determination, and academic integrity.  She develops such positive relationships with people by exhibiting empathy towards others and is interested in using different learning styles for various conditions that challenge a variety of people.”  Jasmyne plans to major in Social Ethics at the University of Washington Bothell then attend law school and become a family lawyer.  

Reem Sabha - LSW Architects $750

I am pleased to introduce Reem Sabha.  Reem is currently a senior at Mountain View High School.  She maintains a 4.0 GPA and has completed twelve Advance Placement courses.  Reem has this to say about herself “I learned more from Hispanic immigrants I taught English to than they learned from me—about my perception of culture, language, and making mistakes.  Volunteering at Legacy Emanuel Hospital taught me the value of compassion and patience.  My internships at Shin-Etsu America Heightened my professionalism and leadership skills, which I actively put to use as a National Honor Society officer.  One of her teachers, Gregory Plitt, had this to say “While serious, intelligent and academic, she is a witty, enjoyable student, and while outgoing and extremely charismatic, she is independently strong and incredibly introspective and thoughtful.”   Reem plans to pursue a degree in Economics which she hopes will allow her to travel the world conducting business.  

Sulamita Senchilo - HomeStreet Bank $750

I am pleased to introduce you to Sulamita Senchilo.  She is a senior at Evergreen High School, a Clark College running start student and the captain of the cross country girls’ team for the past two years.  To quote Sulamita, “being a runner has taught me a lot about commitment.  I focus on my goals and continue to pursue them.  Not only do I do this with running, but I also do this with school.” In addition to her outstanding academics, Sulamita is the treasurer for Evergreen High School National Honor Society and is very involved with her church.  Both of these groups allow her to volunteer for many different ways.   Sulamita is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science with a long term goal of becoming a Physical Therapist.  

Andre Vuong - East Vancouver Business Association $750

I am pleased to present a scholarship award to Mountain View High School Senior Andre Vuong.  Unfortunately, Andre was not able to join us this evening.  Andre is a senior at Mountain View High School where he is very actively involved in sports, music, volunteers in Key Club and tutors other math students.  Andre currently has completed numerous Advance Placement and Honors level courses as well as maintaining a 3.82 GPA. Andre has faced many personal challenges in recent years and he has managed to stay focused on his goals, education, being a top one.  A quote from Andre “I understand the importance of having a steady career given my circumstances and the value of planning for the future.  College is an investment and I plan to be smart with my investments.”  Andre plans to attend University of Washington and study in the computer science program.   

Calvin Clark - Dutch Bros. East Vancouver $750

I am pleased to introduce you to Calvin Clark.  He is a senior at Mountain View High School and captain of the Speech and Debate team. During his high school years, Calvin has been instrumental in helping grow the Speech and Debate team from only 4 members during his freshman year to 40 in his senior year. Barbara Elliot describes Calvin as “a young man who is unfailingly polite, constantly seeking knowledge about the world, and who approaches obstacles with a determined attitude of success.”  Calvin maintains a 4.0 GPA and has completed many AP courses proving his dedication to his education and academic excellence.  Calvin has also been described as an inspiring young man who has worked hard to overcome personal and medical obstacles and in doing so has become highly successful in his own pursuits.  Calvin is planning to pursue a career as environmental lawyer so that he may one day, give back by defending Mother Earth in a court of law.   

Christiana Lee - Columbia Bank $750

I am pleased to introduce Christiana Lee.  Christiana is a senior at Union High School with an impressive list of activities she is involved with including, National Honor Society, Red Cross, Rotary Club, National French Honor Society, U-crew Mentor, Youth Council Board Member, Courts for Kids volunteer, VBS counselor, Youth Group leader, Wind Ensemble, Cross Country and Track.  Christiana has spearheaded many service oriented events which have impacted these various clubs and our community.  Specifically, she organized the first “Mr. Union” event where the proceeds were donated to a local Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  The donations were over $5000 for this event and it is now a yearly fundraiser at Union High School due to her vision, efforts and leadership.  Christiana has completed 13 Advance Placement courses throughout high school and maintains a 4.0 GPA with an outstanding SAT score of 2290.  Christiana’s favorite quote by Francis Chan states “our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.”  Christiana plans to pursue a law degree and ultimately become a judge.

Nicole Vanderzanden - Evergreen School District Foundation Board $750

Nicole is currently attending Union High School. She has participated in Math Club, Wind Ensemble, Union High School Jazz 1, and National Honor Society. Outside of school – Nicole has been involved in the community Walk and Knock program, Project Cinderella, and Metropolitan Youth Symphony Jazz 1. Because of a challenge she had when she was young, she spent a lot of time at the piano and in her room listening to music. Nicole writes: “I love everything about school and always have.” She plans to attend the University of Oregon and major in Business Administration. Her dream is to open up a music school of her own.

Juliette Hallberg - Erik Runyan Jewelers $750   

Juliette has been very involved in the community and has organized a benefit concert for the local Share House. She is currently attending Heritage High School where she has participated in Knowledge Bowl, Girls Tennis and Golf team, National Honor Society, and founded the AP Club. Outside of school  she has volunteered at Sifton Elementary School as a Math and Reading Tutor, as a Salvation army bell ringer, and as a medical volunteer at Legacy Hospital. She plans on attending Willamette University and studying biochemistry, with the goal of becoming a physician. 

Baljit Kaur - Homestreet Bank $750    

Baljit is a daughter to immigrants of the United States from a rural part of India. She is currently attending Mountain View High School where she has been apart of the Speech and Debate Club, Key Club, Girls Tennis team, and National Honor Society. Outside of school  she has volunteered at the scholastic book store and been a tutor for Hispanic Citizenship classes at St. John the Evangelist Church. She plans on attending the University of Washington and study Computer Science in order to become a Computer Science Analyst.

Suren Kanchanavaleerat - LSW Architects $750     

Suren is a student at Union High School and particularly enjoys gymnastics. Suren is a member of the Key Club, Chinese Club, National Honor Society, and the Gymnastics Team. Outside of school  Suren is a bible teacher every summer for kids at Vacation Bible School, a Dance Teacher, and an English tutor for Korean foreign exchange students. Suren plans to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and pursue a degree in dietetics and nutrition.

Joshua Hansen - McKinstry $1,000    

Joshua and his family moved to Vancouver, Washington in 2010 where he is currently attending Heritage High School. At Heritage, he participates in Key Club. Outside of school  Joshua participates in efforts to raise money for the Salvation Army, the yearly Walk and Knock activity to gather food for the Vancouver Food Bank, and has been a service clerk since 2011 at Chucks Produce. Joshua plans on attending Clark College then Washington State University where he will study Sociology with a minor in criminal justice. Joshua’s career goal is to become a detective and serve the community.

Yuliya Nikiforets - West Coast Bank $750   

Yuliya moved from Ukraine at the age of five to Vancouver and is currently attending Evergreen High School. At Evergreen, Yuliya has participated in the Women’s Choral Ensemble and is a Running Start Student at Clark College. Outside of school she has volunteered at Shepherd’s Door Women’s Shelter and been both a Worship Coordinator and a Camp Counselor at her local church. She also interned at SEH America here in Vancouver for 90 hours. She plans to attend WSU Vancouver and study engineering.
